In a tragic development that underscores the fragility of the recently announced ceasefire, Border Security Force (BSF) Sub Inspector Md Imteyaz was killed on Saturday during cross-border firing by Pakistan in the R S Pura sector along the International Boundary in Jammu.
The BSF confirmed his death in a statement on X, saying, “DG BSF and All Ranks salute the supreme sacrifice made by BSF Sub Inspector Md Imteyaz in service to the Nation on 10 May 2025… Prahari Pariwar stands firm with the bereaved family in this trying time.” A wreath-laying ceremony will be held with full honours at the Frontier Headquarters in Jammu on May 11.
The incident occurred just hours after the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan held a phone call in which they agreed to halt all military action on land, at sea, and in the air starting from 5:00 PM IST. However, multiple ceasefire violations have already been reported, including Pakistani drones intercepted by Indian air defences amid blackouts in Srinagar, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Jaisalmer, and Barmer.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri earlier confirmed the ceasefire agreement and stated that the DGMOs would reconvene for further talks on May 12. Despite the agreement, he called out Pakistan’s recent actions as “escalatory” and “provocative.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, stating, “India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”
India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, striking nine terror infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan responded with a series of unprovoked escalations, including drone incursions and artillery fire.
Sub Inspector Imteyaz’s death marks a sobering reminder of the volatility along the border and casts doubt on the longevity and sincerity of the ceasefire agreement.
